Dog Treat Recipes


If you really love your dog and want to get the tail waggin', take some time out and cook up some homemade treats! We have put together some of our favorite recipes that have received two paws up from the canine taste-testers!


Peanut-y Pooch Treats

2 1/4 C Whole Wheat Flour

1 1/4 C Peanut Butter
3/4 C All Purpose Flour 1 C Milk
1 1/4 Tbsp Baking Powder

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Combine Whole Wheat Flour and All Purpose Flour along with baking powder into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the Milk and Peanut Butter and blend until smooth. Gradually stir in the peanut butter mixture to the flour mixture in the larger bowl.

Knead dough by hand for several minutes. Flour a space for the dough such as a counter top or cutting board and begin to roll out dough to desired thickness. (We recommend approximately 1/2 inch thick.) Cut out treats in various shapes or use a cookie cutter from your collection.

Place aluminum foil on a cookie sheet and lay treats approximately 1/4 inch apart. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove treats from oven and allow to cool for several hours before removing. Allow to fully cool overnight before storing. *Cooking time will vary based on thickness of treats.



Cheese Woofs

4 C Whole Wheat Flour

2 eggs, beaten
3/4 C vegetable oil 1 1/4 C shredded cheese
3 tsp. Garlic powder 1 1/4 C Milk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

In a large bowl, combine flour and garlic powder. Gradually stir in vegetable oil, cheese, beaten egg, milk and blend well. On a hard surface, roll out dough to desired thickness. We recommend ᄑ inch thick. Cut out treats to desired shapes or use a cookie cutter to create a specific shape. Place treats on lightly greased cookie sheet spaced evenly. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove treats from oven and allow to cool fully before removing or storing. Treats are ready to serve!



Barking Beef Biscuits

1/2 C. dry milk

1-2.5 oz. Jar beef baby food
1 egg 1/2 C. beef broth
2 tsp. Minced garlic 1/2 C. rye flour
1 tsp. Parsley 1 C. whole wheat flour
6 T. olive oil 1/2 C. Rice Flour
2 tsp. Honey 1/2 C. cracked wheat

Glaze: 1 egg, 2 T. beef broth

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

In a medium to large sized bowl, combine dry milk, egg, minced garlic, parsley, olive oil, honey, baby food and broth. Blending gradually, add all flours and cracked wheat. Continue until a stiff dough is formed.

Flour a surface such as a countertop or cutting board and place dough on that surface. Knead dough until smooth. (Approximately 4-7 minutes) Shape dough into a ball and then roll out until dough is an even 1/2 inch thick. You may then use a cookie cutter to cut out various dog treat shapes or simply use a pizza cutter to make dog strips. Place on a non-stick cookie sheet, placing each biscuit about 1/4 inch apart. (It is recommended that if you do not have a non-stick cookie you should lightly grease and flour your cookie sheet to prevent sticking.)

Bake treats for 30 minutes. Make the glaze by whisking together the egg and broth. After removing biscuits from oven, brush biscuits with glaze on both sides. Return to oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Remove biscuits from oven and allow to cool overnight.

Treats are ready for your dog! Bones can be frozen to ensure tasty freshness!



Tasty Peanut Butter Treats

1 pkg. Dry yeast

1 C. chunky peanut butter
1/2 C. lukewarm water 1 C. Whole Wheat Flour
1 C. mashed potatoes 1/2 C. Rye Flour
1 C. milk 1/2 C Rice Flour
1/2 C molasses 1 egg
1/2 C Chicken stock 2 C. all-purpose flour

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

In a medium to large sized bowl, dissolve the package of yeast in water. In a large saucepan, mix together potatoes, milk, molasses, stock, and peanut butter. Heat, stirring frequently until mixture is boiling. Remove saucepan from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. Next, add yeast mixture. Slowly add in egg, wheat, rye and rice flour to mixture. Continue until a stiff dough is formed.

Flour a surface such as a countertop or cutting board and place dough on that surface. Knead dough until smooth. (Approximately 4-7 minutes) Shape dough into a ball and then roll out until dough is an even ᄑ inch thick. You may then use a cookie cutter to cut out various dog treat shapes or simply use a pizza cutter to make dog strips. Place on a non-stick cookie sheet, placing each biscuit about 1/4 inch apart. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool overnight. Treats will be ready for your dog to taste test! Treats can be frozen to ensure complete freshness for your pooch.



Apple Cinnamon Canine Cookies

1 large apple

1 C oatmeal
1/4 C honey 1 1/2 C. whole wheat flour
1/2 C. water 1/8 C whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

With large apple, core, slice and mince, using a food processor if one is available. In a large bowl, combine the minced apple bits, honey, water, cinnamon and oatmeal. Slowly add in the 1 1/2 cups wheat flour, adding enough to make a stiff dough.

In a small bowl, add 1/8 cup wheat flour.

Using a non-stick cookie sheet, (It is recommended that if you do not have a non-stick cookie you should lightly grease and flour your cookie sheet to prevent sticking.) spoon the dough by rounded teaspoon onto the cookie sheet, spacing each one approximately 2 inches apart. Using the bowl with the extra wheat flour, take a glass, dip into the bowl of wheat flour and flatten each spoonful of dough into a circle. Adjust the size of each one based on how large of a treat you would like to feed your dog.

Bake for 30 minutes. Remove treats from oven and flip to allow cookies to brown evenly. Reduce temperature of oven to 325 degrees and return cookies to oven to allow them to cook for an additional 30 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool overnight.
