Great shell to personalize to your needs- takes about 5 hrs. off the process! We insulated the inside with 3/4 rigid foam and added 5/8 ply to cover. Still LOTS of grow room (Virgil's 8 mos.- already 75 lbs.)We put on claboards and trim, gave it a shingle job- voila! Virgil loves it and it'll stand up to a Maine winter-that's saying something. It would have cost a lot to buy this house done. Great value over all.

House was purchased as a "starter" shell for an insulated, air-conditioned, weatherproof shelter for my 160-pound Great Pyrenees who suffers terribly from the Texas summer heat.

If I hadn't already intended to overhaul the entire house with extra bracing, insulation, and interior walls to protect the insulation, I would have been very disappointed in the kit as a whole. Pieces were cut very precisely, everything fit together perfectly, and assembly was very easy. Unfortunately, the 5/16" plywood used for construction is not only far too thin to give such a large dog house any appreciable roof or side strength, but the floor also made from the same thin wood was a complete joke to think it would support a 160-pound dog and was replaced with 3/4" plywood right from the beginning.

However, the house is a beautiful success and strong enough to support a half-ton pickup after installing the additional wall and roof braces, 1.5" thick styrofoam wall & roof insulation, covering the insulation with 1/8" tempered masonite interior walls to protect the insulation, a pre-coat of wood sealer with two coats of outdoor latex paint, undercoating the bottom side of floor, composition shingles, and a little 5500/btu window air conditioner in the rear wall.

"Frisco" absolutely loves his new house because the timer turns on the A/C around 9AM when the summer temperature is approaching 90 degrees and becoming very uncomfortable for him. So, as the temperature climbs to over 100 degrees during the rest of the day, he only comes out of his 70-degree house once in awhile to stretch his legs and play around in the yard for a few minutes until he decides the dog house is where he really wants to be - such a dog's life - haha.

Comments about Ware A-Frame Dog House - Unfinished:

The house went together in a snap. A little paint and shingles and presto. The only issue was one hole was misaligned on the roof, but it was an easy remedy. Firm construction and no warpage. Very pleased and saves headaches from building one. Can be easily insulated as well.

Comments about Ware A-Frame Dog House - Unfinished:

The plywood is low grade and full of defects. The staples on the floor piece punched through the other side, as well as the side pieces and the roof. Hayneedle should be embarrassed to allow this kind of low quality to be sent out to a consumer.

Comments about Ware A-Frame Dog House - Unfinished:

I like the basic design, however, the quality could be better. Plywood was split in multiple place on pitched roof and damage to the wood on the front. I was disappointed that the blemishes were in highly visible areas. Someone should inspect the kit before shipping. On the plus side, it was easy to assemble and unfinished.

We painted the outside to match the house and it looks great. We bought the large size for out 50 lb dog and it seems like a good fit - I think the M would have been too small.

All of the pieces fit together nicely and it was easy to put together. It seems sturdy - now we just have to wait to see if the dog will use it!

Comments about Ware A-Frame Dog House - Unfinished:

Kudos: Exceptionally easy assembly. Surprisingly sturdy construction. Very attractive design. Very roomy.
Cons: Off-set is still too close to the ground. Had to buy 2x4 to build frame and raise it. No roofing protection. Requires priming and painting. So, plan to spend at least additional $50-60 + a few hours work to get it to habitable condition.
Bottom line: For the price this is the best house on the market. Better than many others priced 2-3 times higher (I had to return other products).
