Dog Bed Sizing Guide

Dog bed sizes would seem to be pretty straightforward. But then how small is small, exactly? Ask a Great Dane and a Yorkie, and you're going to get very different answers. The names of the dog beds at DogHouses.com can thus be a little confusing as to what size or type of dog they're appropriate for. To find out if the beds or dog cots you like are appropriate for your pup or grown-up, please reference the dog size and maximum weight on the individual product pages.

What size is best?

At DogHouses.com, we make it easy to find small, medium, and large dog beds that are right for your breed(s). The chart below features the names of some common types of dogs and shows which dog bed would fit best with those types. Because all dogs are different and vary in size within each breed, we recommend using the guide before buying to ensure the exact fit for your particular dog.

Even though the dog bed size is not always related to the weight of the dog, we have provided general weight ranges for each size. Please keep in mind that the sizing guides are for adult dogs.

Measuring your pet

Most dog beds have manufacturer's size guides by breed, height, and weight, or both. If your dog falls on or near the upper measurements, consider buying the next larger size. Measuring your pet is the most accurate way to choose the correct size. Take your pet's measurements while he or she is lying down and add a few inches for wiggle room. Compare your pet's measurements with the bed measurement, remembering that round or oval beds are measured at the widest point.

Sleep style

Dogs, like people, have different sleeping styles. Some sleep curled up, while others like to sprawl out. Your dog's sleep position will be a factor in deciding which dog bed to buy.

Dogs that like to sleep in a curled position will appreciate beds with sides, giving them a place a curl up and feel secure. Sprawling sleepers will be more comfortable on beds without sides so they can stretch without restriction. Sprawling sleepers may be more comfortable on the next size larger.

No matter what size or what kind of sleeper, there is a perfect bed for your dog.
