DogHouses.com Buying Guide

Kennels, crates, houses, fences, and more

If dogs are indeed like members of the family, then dog houses, kennels, and other canine accommodations are like extensions of our homes. It may not feature indoor plumbing or an entertainment center (unless you have a very precocious dog), but the dog kennel or house you choose should be a worthy addition to your dwelling. This guide to DogHouses.com will help you find the accommodations that offer the comfort, spaciousness, and convenience your pet needs for a happy and healthy lifestyle.

Dog Kennels

Size should be the foremost consideration when choosing an outdoor dog kennel. Your dog's weight, age, breed, and energy level should all factor into your decision. However, don't automatically assume that bigger is better, particularly if a kennel is being used to house train a puppy. In such cases, the pup should be able to lie down, turn around, and have a few extra inches of space. Adding one of our dog kennel roofs or covers (or draping the kennel with a blanket) will help create the den-like atmosphere that dogs often find comforting about kennels.

Midwest K9 Kennel

We make it easier to find the right size kennel for your dog by breaking down our selection into small, medium, large, and extra large items. Custom size kennels are also available, with sizes ranging from 5 feet wide by 5 feet long to 30 feet wide by 30 feet long. If you need a safe outdoor play area for your dog, we also carry dog exercise pens and dog runs, including lightweight and portable dog pens made with sturdy steel frames and durable nylon.

Dog Crates

Dog crates can be used for traveling with your pet or as a quiet hideaway for when he or she needs some rest and alone time. Choosing the right dog crate size can be difficult, so here's a simple weight and size chart that might help you while you shop. A partition or divider can also be used to allow younger dogs to grow into a crate that is larger than they currently need.

  • Up to 12 pounds: 12 to 22 inches (extra small)
  • 11 to 25 pounds: 24 inches (small)
  • 26 to 40 pounds: 30 inches (medium)
  • 41 to 70 pounds: 36 inches (large)
  • 71 to 90 pounds: 42 inches (extra large)
  • 91 to 110 pounds: 48 inches
  • 111 to 125 pounds: 54 inches

If you intend to travel by air, you should know that the Federal Aviation Administration requires plastic dog crates. Browse our airline approved carriers section to find an appropriate travel kennel.

Dog Houses

Our selection of dog houses includes some truly beautiful designs made from cedar, pine, cherry, and other woods. Our plastic dog houses are durable and weather-resistant, and we also have insulated dog houses that help protect outdoor pets from extreme temperatures.

Invisible Dog Fences

Invisible electric dog fences use an underground electrical wire and a dog collar with a receiver in it to administer a shock if the dog gets too close to the "fence" or tries to roam beyond its limits. An invisible dog fence might also be used to protect a garden or flower bed from a dog that likes to dig.

Dog Ramps & Stairs

Dog ramps and stairs are recommended for pet owners who have small dogs or aging dogs that have a difficult time reaching a favorite bed, couch, or chair. Dog stairs and ramps can also be used to help heavier dogs get in and out of vehicles on their own.

Dog Doors & Gates

Our dog gates are designed to keep your pets where you want them, while our dog doors allow pets to go outside when they need to, without your having to let them in and out.
